Getting an invitation to spend New Years Eve in Halmstad, Sweden, together with lovely and dearly missed friends I met in Kamloops, I couldn’t resist but get myself a ticket to Copenhagen, to spend few days there before heading across the border to Sweden. Copenhagen was really nice, although the weather wasn’t too sunny, rather grey and windy. Days are short up here, makes you enjoy the sun even more if you get to see it. Sunset is already around 3 to 4 PM. We got to see many things, did a little canal-boat-tour, and walked out to the little Mermaid. And she literally was little, especially considering that it is a sculpture that famous.

Another Highlight was the changing of the guards. The guards marched in their traditional uniforms and did a little ceremony that endured something like half an hour. Pretty impressing to see people move with such a precision and discipline. Most guards looked like 16-Year old kids though. We were so impressed with the entire ceremony, we decided to re-enact the entire procedure with empty beer bottles at the hostel bar later that night. I don’t need to explain the questioning looks of the strangers around us.

Arriving in Sweden, first thing we learned some words and phrases. There’s many similar and derived words from German and English, which makes written things easy to understand. However, talking is another story, but some basic phrases (like “nice to meet you”) were easy to remember.

We certainly had a blast on New Years Eve, a great time, with great people and great places. If it was up to me, time should have stopped and the night go on forever. I think we all felt invincible that night. Although we had bad luck with the weather, the swedes made up for it with they’re unbelievable kindness and company.

Starting the new year with a shopping trip to one of Sweden’s biggest Shopping Center (no, not Ikea, although there was one right besides) the weird idea of buying myself some ice skates crossed my mind. For only 60 Euros a pair I definitely could not resist. I think my butt will pay for it in the end, as my skating skills are rather questionable.

All in all I could spent some pleasant days with friends I didn’t even know of their existence one year ago, indulge in some memories, and more importantly, create new ones. It was the long needed get-away I was looking forward to and it fully paid off. I’m grateful to know such amazing people.
